Varicose veins are a common condition in which the veins become enlarged, twisted, and sometimes painful. They most often occur in the legs and can be seen just under the skin. Varicose veins develop when the valves that control blood flow in the veins stop working properly. This causes blood to pool in the veins, leading to their enlargement.
While varicose veins may not cause any symptoms for some people, they can occasionally lead to pain or swelling in the leg. In some cases, varicose veins can also lead to more serious problems such as ulcers or blood clots.
Treatment for varicose veins typically involves lifestyle changes and wearing compression stockings. Vein doctors offer more advanced yet minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins. Only in severe cases is surgery necessary.
Here, we will talk about the different ways vein doctors treat varicose veins.
Sclerotherapy
This treatment involves a solution being injected into the vein, which causes it to scar and close. Sclerotherapy usually takes less than 30 minutes to complete, depending on the number of veins being treated. Additionally, it may take several treatments to see results. Once the varicose veins are treated using sclerotherapy, they can no longer come back, and from the very first session, patients can see an immense improvement in their problem veins.
The most common side effects of sclerotherapy are redness, itching, and bruising, which typically lasts for two weeks or less. These side effects are usually mild and temporary.
Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT)
EVLT is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a laser to destroy damaged veins. This helps improve blood flow and relieves symptoms such as pain, swelling, and cramping. This is usually done with local anesthesia, so patients do not feel any pain and are comfortable throughout the procedure. The procedure takes about an hour to complete. After ward, you will need to wear compression stockings for two weeks to help your body heal properly.
Radio frequency Ablation (RFA)
Radio frequency ablation (RFA) uses heat produced by radio frequency energy to destroy problematic veins, which are then absorbed by the body. RFA is performed under local anesthesia and usually takes less than an hour. There is minimal scarring, and recovery time is short, with most people able to return to their normal activities within a few days. RFA has been shown to be safe and effective in treating varicose veins, with long-term results comparable to those of surgery.
